Jackie is a Pulitzer winner and a professor at my alma mater. She presented this story to my class years ago and it was so impacting that when I retell it to this day, as I often do, I can’t do it without tears. It is an unparalleled love story. But when considered in the context of late 80’s ignorance about AIDS it was politically and socially groundbreaking. In order to really understand the story you should read the epilogue as well. And the pictures… the photographer, Jean Pieri, captured one of the Hanson brothers sitting outside of the funeral service with his head in his hands.
